K-9 Unit
The Davie Police Department has both Patrol Canine Teams and a Narcotics Canine Team. Our Patrol Canine Teams are currently assigned to the evening/midnight hours and are on call 24 hours a day. Our Narcotic Canine Team is assigned to our Special Investigations Unit.
The Patrol Canine teams are used to support our Road Patrol in criminal apprehension, evidence detection, crowd control, locating lost persons, and assisting in potentially violent situations. These teams complete a rigorous tryout process and attend a 480 hour Canine Academy. Once completing this process they must complete an annual certification through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Each team is required to train once a week as part of their assigned duties. In addition to their assigned duties each Patrol Canine Team is cross certified in either Narcotics Detection or Bomb Detection.
The Narcotic Canine Team is assigned to our Special Investigations Unit. They are used for the detection of narcotics in vehicles, buildings, open areas, and on persons. The Narcotic Canine Team must complete a Canine Academy and attend weekly training.
Their service to the community and their fellow officers has proven to be invaluable. Beyond their assigned duties, the Canine Teams provides popular demonstrations to our school children and at a variety of Town events throughout the year.
