Red Light Camera Safety Program
Town of Davie Police Department
Red-light running is a serious intersection safety issue across the nation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Traffic Safety Facts 2008 Report, there were more than 2.3 million reported intersection related crashes, resulting in more than 7,770 fatalities and approximately 733,000 injuries in 2008.
In 2009, there were 33,808 fatalities on our Nation’s roadways. Of these, 7,043 (20.8%) were either at an intersection or related to an intersection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that two-thirds of those killed were not the violator.
In 2011, there were 4489 crashes in the Town of Davie (excluding I-595). These crashes resulted in 1312 people being injured and 8 resulted in fatalities.
Q. Why did the Town of Davie implement this program?
A. As you can see from the above information, red-light running is a serious problem throughout the nation. This program has been implemented in Davie to reduce the number of red light violations which will translate into fewer crashes, fewer injuries, and fewer fatalities. Our goal is to increase the awareness of the danger of running red lights and improve the safety of everyone traveling through the town.
Q. What is a red light violation
A. A red light violation occurs when a driver enters an intersection after the traffic signal has turned to a steady red.
Q.What delineates an intersection?
A. Section 316.003 of the Florida Statutes define intersection as follows:

Q. What do I do if I receive a Notice of Violation?
A. If you receive a notice of violation, this means that your vehicle was captured by the red light camera system in violation of Florida State Statutes. The Notice of Violation is the first notification you receive of this infraction. This notification will include a notice number and a PIN number which will allow you to access this video to see the violation that was captured by the camera system. If you do not wish to contest the Notice of Violation, you can pay a fine of $158.00. There are no points assessed on your Driver’s License and this violation will not be listed on your driving record. If you were not the driver of the vehicle, you may provide the Davie Police Department with an affidavit which states this. This affidavit must identify the person that was driving your vehicle at the time of the violation by providing their full name, date of birth, address, and driver’s license number. This affidavit can be obtained by visiting www.violationinfo.com. If you wish to contest the citation, you do not have to do anything at this time. By doing nothing, a Uniform Traffic Citation will be issued and you will receive this in the mail in approximately 30 days. Upon receiving the Uniform Traffic Citation, follow the instructions on the bottom to request a hearing.
