As you celebrate Independence Day this Fourth of July, make sure to keep safety in mind.Fireworks, swimming pools, sunburns and hot barbecues can cause injuries to children, pets and adults. The Davie Police Department reminds residents that Town Ordinance 7- 3 regulates the use and storage of fireworks. Stay safe and legal this holiday by following these.

Simple rules and tips:

  • Adults should always supervise the use of fireworks by children.
  • Don’t hold fireworks in your hand.
  • Keep a readily available source of water in case of a fire.
  • Spectators should remain a safe distance from the fireworks.
  • Only light fireworks outdoors on a smooth, flat surface, away from all flammable materials including dry leaves and paper.
  • Never try to relight fireworks that appear to be duds.
  • Dispose of all firework materials by first soaking them in water.

Pet Precautions

  • Don't leave your pets unattended outside or in a car by themselves.
  • Make sure your pet has its collar and ID tags on.
  • If possible, keep your pet in a secure area indoors to reduce anxiety.

Besides Fireworks

  • Heatstroke and dehydration are a concern, be sure to drink plenty of water.
  • If you host or attend a barbecue, beware of possible fire hazards and outdoor food
  • spoilage.
  • Make sure children are at least three feet away from the grill area.
  • Use good judgment when going swimming or boating. Make sure novice swimmers use

  • drinking.

  • of children.
  • Decorate with caution; be mindful of decorations that may become flammable.
  • Watch for pedestrians in the roadway.
